Responsive Classroom Program Developer Mike Anderson Presents Teaching Strategies at ASCD Conference

March 14, 2014

TURNERS FALLS, MA—Common Core State Standards require classroom environments supporting students as they take the risks needed for great learning, but some may be surprised at the integration of social and emotional learning (SEL) embedded directly in many of the standards.

That’s the message Responsive Classroom Program Developer Mike Anderson will deliver in a presentation at the ASCD Annual Conference in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 16. Drawing on years of experience as an elementary teacher and as an educational consultant for Responsive Classroom, Anderson will highlight and help elementary educators recognize the many social and emotional skills embedded within the Common Core State Standards and provide practical, effective strategies for teaching these skills.

According to Anderson, “It’s essential to explicitly teach social and emotional skills. You can’t assume that students already understand how, for example, to greet one another in a friendly and respectful manner, or to engage in productive academic conversations. And these skills are absolutely key, not only to school climate, but also for academic performance.”

This highly interactive presentation will provide strategies for direct instruction of SEL skills and a framework for creating the nurturing learning environments needed for relevant high-level academic work. Participants will learn about Interactive Modeling and interactive learning structures and will leave the session with enough background and practice to begin using these strategies in their classrooms immediately.

Anderson’s session, titled “Social and Emotional Learning and the Common Core Standards,” will be held on Sunday morning, March 16, from 8:00–9:30 a.m.
