Whole Child Approach to Improving Student Outcomes for Elementary Educators: Understanding Child Development, ages 4-10

To thrive in school and life, children must be safe, happy, healthy, engaged, and supported. The Whole Child workshop for elementary educators explores the stages of development and age milestones of children ages 4–10. This workshop places an emphasis on teaching skills as a protective factor during grades 3–5 that better equip students to avoid risky behavior as they age into the risk-taking years of early and middle adolescence.

While the brain experiences its most rapid growth between birth and age 5, ages 6 through 10 are considered the “sensitive period” because of the active role that experiences play in brain development. During this stage of childhood, the brain is in a constant state of adapting that allows it to maintain or enhance activity in other areas. This is also a prime opportunity to begin to teach skills that support decision-making and responsibility as well as skills that act as protective factors against risky behavior.
