To thrive in school and life, children must be safe, happy, healthy, engaged, and supported. The Whole Child workshop for secondary educators dives into the developmental milestones during the “risk-taking years” of adolescents ages 11–17.
Risky behavior tends to follow a typical trajectory: it is low in childhood, increases around puberty, peaks in adolescence through early adulthood, and then decreases in adulthood. Risky behaviors often reflect the uneven gap between an adolescent’s physical and social maturity. While adolescents are progressing into adulthood, their decision-making processes are quite mismatched to their physical and biological maturity.
This workshop places an emphasis on teaching protective skills during the risk-taking years to help
adolescents avoid the risky behavior that is natural for this age. Teaching these skills can lower the amount of risk factors for bad decision-making and increase protective factors to help them make good, informed choices as they journey to middle and high school.
