Creating Calm: Brain-Based Strategies for Learning, Regulation, and Performance

Practical strategies for K–12 educators across classrooms, counseling, athletics, and extracurricular learning environments.

A calm, supportive learning environment promotes brain-based learning by reducing stress and anxiety and improving students' focus, memory, and emotional regulation.

When students feel safe and supported, the brain is better positioned to move from a heightened state of defense toward the attention, regulation, and higher-level thinking needed for learning and performance. Calm learning environments—whether in the classroom, in athletics, or in extracurricular settings—foster a sense of physical and emotional safety that is foundational to task completion, engagement, performance, and retention.

This workshop provides practical CALM strategies that educators can use across K–12 learning environments to support students’ regulation, readiness, and engagement.

Ideal for all K–12 educators, but especially for guidance counselors, coaches, performing arts, educators who teach honors or remediation courses, curriculum and instructional leaders, and others who support teachers or have broad responsibility for setting conditions within schools in support of student learning, athletic performance, and behavioral, social, emotional, and well-being outcomes.
