Richard WeissbourdA lecturer in education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Kennedy School of Government, Richard Weissbourd focuses on childhood vulnerability and resilience, the achievement gap, moral development, and effective schools and children's services. He has worked as a psychologist in community mental health centers and on the Annie E. Casey Foundation's New Futures Project, an effort to keep children in school. Mr. Weissbourd has founded several interventions for at-risk children, including the citywide literacy initiatives ReadBoston and WriteBoston and, with Robert Selman, Project ASPIRE, a social and ethical development intervention. He is also a founder of the Lee Academy, which enrolls children at 3 years old. Mr. Weissbourd has advised city, state, and federal officials on family policy and school reform and has written for many scholarly and popular publications and for National Public Radio. The American School Board Journal recently named his 1996 book The Vulnerable Child: What Really Hurts America's Children and What We Can Do About It as one of the top ten education books of all time. The New Yorker magazine recognized Mr. Weissbourd's book The Parents We Mean to Be: How Well-Intentioned Adults Undermine Children's Moral and Emotional Development as one of the top 24 nonfiction books of 2009.
