Educators who want to learn about and gain proficiency in the Responsive Classroom approach have a variety of options:
Advertised Workshops and Institutes
We offer one-day workshops and week-long institutes for teachers and administrators in dozens of locations nationwide each year.
On-site Services
Our certified consultants can present any of our one-day or week-long offerings at your site, provide follow-up consultation, and assist with schoolwide implementation on-site at your school or district.
School-based Study
Learn on your own with a professional development kit and other study group resources, by using The Responsive Classroom Assessment, and by designating teachers at your site as Responsive Classroom site leaders.
Where to Begin
One-Day Workshops
Our one-day introductory overview is an opportunity to explore foundational ideas, see practices in action, investigate Responsive Classroom approaches to discipline, and experience a Morning Meeting.
The Responsive Classroom Sampler is designed for elementary school classroom teachers and other school staff. The Overview for Administrators is customized for school and district leaders.
Responsive Classroom Level I
For many teachers, taking the Responsive Classroom Level I course (RCI) is an ideal way to start. This week-long course is offered each summer in dozens of locations and can also be presented on-site.
RCI provides an intensive, hands-on introduction to five of the practices at the heart of the Responsive Classroom approach. It is a prerequisite for many of our follow-up services.
Resources for Independent and Group Study
Another way to begin is to use Responsive Classroom books, DVDs, or a professional development kit as a starting point. This approach allows teachers and schools to customize the pace at which they learn, usually by focusing on one practice at a time. Visit our bookstore.
Next Steps
Responsive Classroom Level II
The Responsive Classroom Level II (RCII) course builds on the foundational knowledge gained in RCI and introduces several more key practices. RCII is offered as a week-long course each summer in multiple locations. It can also be presented as a series of on-site sessions for a group at your school.
One-day Follow-up Workshops
Educators who have completed RCI can take these workshops, which expand on and deepen understanding of practices covered in RCI. We currently offer Responding to Misbehavior and Morning Meeting and Academics in locations nationwide during the school year and on-site for groups at schools.
Resources for Independent and Group Study
Our professional development kits, DVDs, and many of our books offer excellent support for in-school study. Highly recommended is The Responsive Classroom Assessment, which includes a tool for assessing individual teachers’ use of Responsive Classroom practices and guidelines to help focus and plan continued learning.
On-site Consultation
Once staff from a school have completed RCI, we can provide a range of follow-up services, from demonstration lessons to review workshops. Learn more
Site Leaders
Highly skilled Responsive Classroom teachers can be designated as Responsive Classroom Site Leaders. Site Leaders have access to a members-only website with professional resources such as articles, DVD clips, coaching tips, and ideas for leading study groups in schools working towards schoolwide implementation.
Schoolwide Implementation
Once a number of teachers in a school or district are implementing the Responsive Classroom approach, there is often a desire to incorporate Responsive Classroom principles, tools, strategies, and structures schoolwide. We offer a range of services to help do this. Learn more
Responsive Classroom Schools Conference
The annual Responsive Classroom Schools Conference brings hundreds of administrators and teacher leaders together to learn about implementing Responsive Classroom practices schoolwide and building the adult community in school.
Responsive Classroom Level III
The Responsive Classroom Level III (RCIII) course explores Responsive Classroom practices in depth, based on individual classroom or school issues. This course is offered as a week-long summer institute in selected locations. Prerequisites: RCI and RCII
