An audio and a visual signal are an important alternative to the teacher’s voice for getting children’s quick and quiet attention.

Many teachers use a raised hand for the visual signal and a bell or chime for the audio signal. Whatever signal you choose, it’s important to introduce the signal on the first day of school, clearly establish expectations about how children respond to the signal, and then practice with the children as much as possible.
